About the Research Archive
Here’s a quick overview of my general approach and a summary of the type of research papers collected in the archive.
Research experience in philosophy, cognitive science and complex systems influences my approach to work and to life in general. These pages include papers, unfinished ‘work in progress’, conference information and related details mainly from my time as a researcher in industry.

This list of references appears in my monograph Mind Out of Matter.
This bibliography is like a glimpse into the past, an artefact of my time with BT’s Complex Systems Laboratory. Originally intended for internal use within a research group and later made available to the public, the bibliography has not been actively maintained since 2000.
These papers date from my time in research in BT’s Complex Systems Laboratory, quickly sketching out positions in specific areas with a view to eventual re-crafting into more extended, carefully argued articles.
With the support of the research arm of what was then known as BT Laboratories, in April 1998 I hosted an international workshop (IWRC ’98) exploring key technologies needed to create a cognitively sophisticated and — ultimately — self aware autonomous mobile robot.
My 1998 book Mind Out of Matter developed a robust account of the mind/body relationship without doing violence to fundamental physics.
These are very quick and tidy and thoroughly un-polished synopses of the kinds of topics which featured in my prior research work. They are intended just to capture some central points succinctly and should by no means be taken as serious scholarship.
